Two years ago, knowing how to use ChatGPT was impressive. You could walk into an interview and mention it and people would be interested.

That is no longer the case. Everyone uses AI now. Your interviewer uses it. Your competition uses it. The person sitting next to you in the waiting room uses it. Using AI is the baseline, not the advantage.

So what is the advantage? Understanding it.

Let me explain what I mean by that, because this is not about becoming a machine learning engineer or learning to code neural networks. It is much simpler and much more practical than that.

Using AI vs understanding AI: a real example

Imagine two people applying for the same content writing role at an EdTech company in Bangalore.

Person A uses ChatGPT to write sample articles. The output is clean, grammatically correct, well-structured. They submit it as part of their application. When the interviewer asks how they wrote it, they say "I used ChatGPT." When the interviewer asks why one paragraph is factually incorrect, they did not notice because they never checked.

Person B also uses ChatGPT, but differently. They use it to generate a rough draft, then fact-check every claim, rewrite sections in their own voice, and add examples from their own experience. When the interviewer asks the same question, Person B says: "I used ChatGPT for the initial structure, but I verified the statistics, rewrote the opening because the AI version was too generic, and added the case study from my internship because the AI could not know that."

Person A used AI. Person B understood AI. Person B gets hired.

What does "understanding AI" actually mean?

It does not mean knowing how transformer models work or being able to explain backpropagation. For most careers, that level of technical depth is unnecessary.

Understanding AI means knowing three things:

1. What AI is good at and what it is bad at.

AI is excellent at generating text, summarising documents, translating languages, writing code, and identifying patterns. It is bad at factual accuracy, nuanced judgment, understanding context that was not in its training data, and anything that requires genuine creativity or original thinking. If you know this boundary, you know when to trust the output and when to verify it.

2. How to spot when AI is wrong.

AI does not tell you when it is making something up. It presents everything with the same confidence, whether it is a verified fact or a complete hallucination. People who understand AI develop a habit of checking. They ask: does this number sound right? Can I verify this claim? Is this example real or invented? This is not paranoia. It is professionalism.

3. How to combine AI output with human judgment.

The most valuable people in any workplace are those who can take what AI produces and make it better. Add context the AI could not know. Remove generic language and replace it with specifics. Challenge the AI's structure and rearrange it for the actual audience. This is the skill that turns AI from a crutch into a tool.

Why this matters for your career

Here is what is happening in the job market right now. Companies are no longer impressed that you can use AI. They expect it. What they are now filtering for is whether you can use it well. That means understanding its limitations, catching its mistakes, and adding value on top of its output.

In the next 2-3 years, this gap will only grow. People who just use AI will find their work is easily replaceable, because anyone can type a prompt and get the same output. People who understand AI will be the ones reviewing, improving, and making decisions about that output. Those are fundamentally different roles with fundamentally different career trajectories.

A quick self-test

Answer these honestly:

When ChatGPT gives you a statistic, do you verify it before using it?

Can you explain, in one sentence, why AI sometimes makes things up?

When AI writes something for you, do you edit it or submit it as is?

Do you know which tasks AI handles well and which ones it should not be trusted with?

If you answered no to more than one of these, you are in the "using" category. That is fine for now, but it will not be fine for long.

One thing to try this week

The next time you use any AI tool for something that matters, whether it is an email, a report, or interview preparation, do not accept the first output. Instead, ask yourself three questions before you use it:

Is this factually accurate? Can I verify every claim?

Does this sound like me, or does it sound like a machine?

What did the AI miss that I know from my own experience?

Make this a habit and you will slowly move from using AI to understanding it. That shift is worth more than any certification.
